Biography
Matt Lunson was born and raised in
Tasmania, Australia.
His first music teacher was Miss Vaughan.
She made music fun and he promised to name his first album after her.
He was eight.
He listened to his parent's records:
Glenn Campbell, Shirley Bassey, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Neil Diamond etc.
He listened to his sister's records:
Kiss, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and The Sex Pistols.
He
travelled extensively and then settled in Sydney and joined his first band.
Sydney's inner Western suburb of Newtown was home to a plethora of great, big,
dirty rock and roll bands and Hasselhoff was one the city's finest. Newtown's
hub was King Street, as featured in The Lemonhead's song My Drug Buddy and it
was here that Matt discovered what being in a band was all about. As lead singer,
Matt toured with Hasselhoff incessantly, releasing material along the way before
he left Australia for London in 1998.
Shortly after his arrival he took a weekend break to Dublin and fell in love with the city. Matt has since then divided his time between Dublin, Sydney and Tasmania and his most recent trip home was to record his first solo album. In removing himself from any discernible music scene and instead favouring the isolation of rural Tasmania, Matt has produced a highly distinctive and original work.
The
recording process was one of total self-sufficiency and the first time that
Matt had endeavoured to play all of the instruments himself. Beyond a writer
and record producer, Matt is a true multi- instrumentalist, having played virtually
every part on the album. This proficiency affords a foundation on which to pin
his lyrical proposals and the assurance to improvise and depart from the page
when performing live.
"Tasmania is such an amazing place that you can't help but be inspired
to create something that reflects it's unbelievable natural beauty."
With his musical history steeped in the post-punk sounds of The Birthday Party and seminal Australian band The Saints, Miss Vaughan is a departure and very much an exercise in restraint for the former lead singer of Sydney underground punk legends, Hasselhoff. Miss Vaughan is a beautiful sounding record and as it reveals itself, you discover that it is a deep and multi-layered affair, full of darkness and light.
"I wanted to make the anti-Hasselhoff record and see if my songwriting could stand up to the naked ear without the assistance of layered guitars etc."
Returning to Ireland with a fistful of recordings, Miss Vaughan was completed in Dublin with the help of Dave Geraghty from BellX1 and The Rotators and mixed at Tumbleweed Studios in Dundalk. The new mix included the addition of some piano, guitars and strings and it is these extra touches that really make the album sparkle.
"Working with Dave is inspirational in every way. He makes things look so easy. He's incredibly creative and just a great musician."
Matt
is currently touring the album in Ireland and has also recently appeared with
BellX1, Mundy, Mary Coughlan, The Walls, Ollie Cole, Tim Freedman (The Whitlams)
and Liam O Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers)
Miss Vaughan made music fun. It still is.
